Hikkaduwa is a well known tourist spot which is famous for its beautiful beach, corals and sub tropical fishes. The town is located in the Southern province of Sri Lanka. About 99 km away from the commercial capital Colombo along the coastal line and 20 km northwest of Galle.
A reef that runs parallel to the seashore a few meters below the water level can be explored with glass bottomed boats that are available specially for coral watching in this area. Several wrecks that have occurred in the sea near Hikkaduwa attract divers from all over the world. Because its easy shallows, it is a good place for divers, especially beginners. Much clearer water and a large number of fishes including Snappers, Reef fish and Napoleon Wrasse can be seen further offshore from the coastal line. Surfing in this region is also a popular activity. Best time for surfing is the dry season which falls from November to March. The four brakes from North to South including Locals break, Main peak, Hansa surf break and Beach break facilitates all types of Surfers from beginners to experts.
Hikkaduwa Bird Lake is located 5 kilometers away from the center of Hikkaduwa. Bird Lake will bring you a pleasant change with its very active beach life. Also the Bird Lake holds a wide range of wild life. These includes some exotic birds and water lizards along with the popular sweet-water prawns. Water sports such as water skiing and wakeboarding can also be found at the east end of the lake.
